Camera sources and playback
Know what a camera view can tell you before you press Play.
Separate images and short clips can be delayed.
No video request before Play. No automatic polling.
A successful load does not confirm when the scene was recorded.
Where the views come from
Camera imagery is provided by Transport for London (TfL). We display the source imagery with its original proportions and markings. Camera angles and coverage can change.
The catalogue keeps each established camera address, including views whose configured source is unavailable, so you can find an alternative from its camera page.
Short clips refreshed periodically
These traffic-camera views use periodically updated images and short clips. They are not continuous live broadcasts and can be delayed or interrupted.
Loading a preview or playing a clip does not establish when its scene was captured. We do not turn your device clock, a page update or a successful load into a capture timestamp.
Understanding playback messages
Video loads when you choose Play clip. The native controls let you pause or replay it. Playback pauses when you hide the tab, and an opened clip expires after 15 minutes so an old scene does not stay on screen indefinitely.
A loading attempt times out after 20 seconds. If a clip fails, try loading it again or choose another view. An error can come from the source, your connection or your browser; it describes this attempt and does not confirm a camera-wide outage.
An unavailable listing means this site has no verified playable source configured for that view. It stays in the catalogue with alternative camera links.
Connecting to the media provider
Preview images and videos are requested directly from your browser to TfL’s media host. That provider receives the connection information needed to serve the media. You can browse camera pages without starting video playback.
The road-camera catalogue
The wider directory uses TfL’s published JamCam positions. A catalogue check records when we requested the source listing, not when a frame was captured. “TfL lists media” is a provider flag; it is not an independent playback test. Listings marked unavailable or checks that fail remain visible with alternatives.
We retain a dated position directory as a fallback, without treating its old status as current. No preview wall or hidden players check camera health, and videos start only when requested. Searches do not create separate indexable camera pages.

Your viewing choices and privacy
- Main-site camera searches are processed in your browser. Search text is not sent to an analytics service. Catalogue searches may be kept in this tab’s session storage to restore Back navigation.
- Saved views store only camera identifiers locally. Notebook notes remain in page memory unless you choose to download them. If browser storage is blocked, the relevant tools explain their temporary state.
- Camera media requests connect your browser to TfL. An optional street map connects to OpenStreetMap only after you load it. A YouTube player connects to YouTube only after you request playback. Those providers receive the connection details needed for their services.
- Cloudflare delivers the public main-site pages and processes request/connection details. This site does not make a claim about a fixed hosting-log retention period.
Contact uses an email link, not an on-site enquiry database. Your email application handles sending the message. Contact LondonWebcam about corrections or personal-data questions. Existing blog pages have their own retained policies and behaviour.
Writing and illustrations
The field guide is published by LondonWebcam with AI-assisted drafting and illustrative artwork. It does not claim an individual author’s credentials or first-hand reporting. Editorial scenes are illustrations, not current webcam frames or documentary photographs. Historical and technical claims should be read beside their cited sources.
